Highlights

  • Destiny 2's release date is September 6
  • It is out for PS4 and Xbox One this month
  • The PC version will be available on October 24

Destiny 2 is out this week for the PS4 and Xbox One, releasing on September 6, with a PC release next month, on October 24. The sci-fi shared world shooter is the sequel to 2014’s Destiny, which released to somewhat middling reviews. After several expansions and updates, the game ended up being what it should have been at launch. It appears that Destiny 2 developer Bungie has learned from these issues, resulting in a game that doubles down on narrative and a single-player experience.

Here’s everything you need to know about Destiny 2.

Destiny 2 release date and start time

Destiny 2 release date is September 6 for the PS4 and Xbox One. The PC version is out on October 24.

Bungie has said the Destiny 2 start time for your region is 12:01 on Wednesday September 6. What this means is, some locations like Europe, for example, will get to play it before the US.

Keep in mind that in North America however, all players will be able to play Destiny 2 the moment its midnight Eastern time, which is 9pm on the West Coast on September 5. This could mean that some European territories like the UK may have it unlock an hour prior to midnight, given that European Standard Time is an hour ahead. It could also impact the Destiny 2 India start time, as India falls under Europe for logistical purposes.

The reason for this staggered launch is to distribute server load evenly, and allow Bungie to sort out technical issues (if any) for a smoother launch.

When can you preload Destiny 2?
Right now, both PS4 and Xbox One versions of Destiny 2 can be preloaded. If you’re buying it digitally this ensures you can play the game the moment the servers go live.

Destiny 2 download size
On the PS4 you’ll need around 30.78GB of free space, and on the Xbox One, it's around 34.98GB. The game is available for preload on both consoles right now. Expect a larger download size for the PC version due to added effects and high-resolution textures when it hits in October.

Several timed exclusives come to the PS4 as a part of publisher Activision’s marketing deal with Sony. They are as follows:

  • Lake of Shadows Strike
  • Borealis Exotic Sniper Rifle
  • Competitive multiplayer map Retribution
  • Apex Ship
  • Exclusive gear

These items will be for PS4 Destiny 2 players only until Fall 2018.

Destiny 2 PS4 Pro and Xbox One X frame rate and resolution
Destiny 2 will be 4K at 30fps on the PS4 Pro. It seems that the Xbox One X version will have the same resolution and frame rate.

Destiny 2 Design Director Luke Smith explains: “The console, the PS4 Pro is super powerful, but it couldn’t run our game at 60. Our game’s this rich physics simulation where collision of players, networking, etc, and like, it wouldn’t run… [there’s] not enough horsepower there.".

Destiny 2 Project Lead Mark Noseworthy added: "But there's tons of GPU power in the PS4 Pro. That's why we're doing 4K, right? It's on the CPU side. Destiny's simulation, like we have more AI, more monsters in an environment with physically simulated vehicles and characters and projectiles, and it's part of the Destiny magic, like that, like 30 seconds of fun, like coming around a corner and throwing a grenade, popping a guy in the head, and then you add like five, six, seven other players in a public event; that is incredibly intensive for hardware."

While Destiny 2 seems to double down on story with an expanded single-player campaign, the Destiny 2 beta was a somewhat lean affair when compared to the beta for the first game. Could it be a sign of things to come? We’ll know for sure soon after the launch. Stay tuned for our review of the Destiny 2.
